Triumph of the Cyborg Composer

Is computer-composed music still music?  Does it have “soul?”

If I ever wanted to go back to school, I think I’d love to focus on this kind of stuff.

Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) - Beyonce (via PomplamooseMusic)

I know I’ve linked this elsewhere before now, but I don’t want to lose track of it.  Having just tried to do some recording myself, this is a lot harder to do than it looks.

There’s nothing wrong with copying - at all… because I mean, even if you’re a saxophone player and you copy Charlie Parker solos note-for-note and you actually play ‘em on the gig, you still won’t be Charlie Parker… You’ll just be a bad Charlie Parker imitation.

Norah Jones On Piano Jazz : NPR

I was lucky enough to be at the live taping of this at Tanglewood in 2003.  I hadn’t listened to it since, until tonight. I just love the whole concert.  McPartland is a genius at the keyboard, and Norah Jones sounds great - even soloing over a couple tunes. How scary must that be, trading 4’s with Marian McPartland?!

Check it out. You’ll enjoy it.

Creating Rehearsal Numbers in Sibelius 6

I just spent too much time trying to figure out how to make the rehearsal marks in a song be the measure numbers they are put on.  ⌘-R seems to do the trick adding A, B, C etc. to the score. I wanted measure numbers.  13, 25, 53 etc.

Create -> Rehearsal Mark brings up this helpful dialog if you want to add custom prefixes or suffixes to your rehearsal marks. A. B. (C) etc. No luck.

Rehearsal Mark dialog

Then I found under Create -> Text -> Special Text -> Bar Numbers (parts) which just adds text with the same style rules that you have defined for the Bar Numbers already.

Finally onto the Engraving Rules with Shift-⌘-E  There it was!! This let me change to using the Bar Number as the rehearsal mark.  After setting that, anytime you press ⌘R in your score, you’ll get a new rehearsal mark with the current bar number.

Engraving Rules

Best part is, when you renumber your bars, or add measures, they update!

Autumn Leaves

The falling leaves drift by my window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
